There are lots of HR support providers out there, some of them are better than others but you need to find one that is the right fit for your business.
So what should you consider when looking for a new supplier?
Do I get access to an expert?
Many larger HR support providers work on a call centre model and the people you will be speaking to may not be HR experts, but will instead be reading from scripted answers to a wide range of HR questions. Whether you get access to an expert must play an important part in your decision making process. You need to be sure that when you pick up the phone with pressing issue that you will get not only the advice you need, but also advice that is tailored to your business.
How long do you sign up for?
Most HR support providers are based on long term contracts, these can range from 12 months to 7 years. Do you need to tie your business into such a long term commitment, or would an ad-hoc service be something that is more beneficial to you? You also need to be aware of auto-renewal, most suppliers will require that you give them proper notice or they will automatically roll over your contract.
Will my supplier help me understand HR and employment law longer term?
‘Give a man a fish and you can feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you can feed him for a lifetime’. It is all well and good having somebody there to fix a problem but it would be much better to have a supplier who can teach you how to avoid problems in the first place. Will they keep you up to date with developments in employment law and HR practices in a meaningful and practical way?Sending you bundles of papers with updates may not been what you need, have time for or be information that is relevant to you.
