When our business is under threat, we feel under threat and our natural emotional regulation systems kick in. For some of us, we go into overdrive and create an impossible list of tasks or conditions which we think will make us feel safe again. Others may go into hiding and avoid dealing with the issues altogether, hoping that it will just go away.
I think there is a third category of business owner who is trying to tackle the threat in what they think is a balanced way but in reality they are frozen in their business, with enough drive to show up and take some action but merely going through the motions day in, day out and not doing enough to change what is happening or how they feel about it.
Sometimes they have no choice due to external conditions outside of their control, others just tell themselves that. They have learned to accept the threat and tolerate the consequences, but they do not feel safe or happy.
It’s not about what happens to you but how you choose to respond. Where is your head at? Is your mindset helping change your circumstances?
If you are struggling and don’t know how to feel better, speak to someone who may be able to help you – your business partner, spouse or other family member, best friend, fellow business owner or a therapist.
We all need support at one time or another so stop toughing it out alone!
