Hi! I see you. Going through the motions of being the boss of your business, in a role that you don’t enjoy anymore, but feeling like you have to do it. Because it’s your business. This isn’t what you signed up for when you started this journey, is it?
You’ve been successful and recruited a team which enabled you to delegate so much to other people, which I’m sure was a relief at first, but you’re probably not finding meaning in the stuff that you’ve kept to yourself or enjoying being an employer. If so, I bet you’re on autopilot mode, merely going through the motions day in, day out.
You’re ultimately responsible for what happens to the people in your business and that means looking after their health and wellbeing, as well as compliance with a myriad of HR rules and employment laws.
Who is looking after your mental health? What reasonable adjustments to the workplace should we make for you? Would you like to work flexibly? Are you taking adequate rest breaks?
Everyone thinks you’ve got it easy as the business owner; you can come and go as you please, earn loads of money and do what you like whenever you want to. You wish! It’s just not that simple.
And so, you continue showing up, getting the job done, making sure the business gets paid. Because you have overheads, commitments and responsibilities, including those associated with your staff.
But you don’t mention them to the staff for fear of stressing them out, putting them under too much pressure to perform (bullying?) or making them feel so unsettled that they will find another job elsewhere, which would leave you short-handed.
I’ll probably get a barrage of comments now defending employees or giving examples of business owners who have set work boundaries and enjoy being a business owner. I didn’t say this post applied to all employers. But if this post resonates with you, get in touch as I may be able to help you switch on and fly again.
YOU are the most important worker in your business to me. And you should be to you too.
