Leaders are put under pressure to behave “like a leader”, but what does that actually mean?! It’s so confusing!!
Be decisive but don’t tell people what to do. Be strong but make sure you show vulnerability. Set a clear path but make sure its inclusive to everyone. Be visible but don’t be arrogant.
Sadly, I see too many leaders show greater potential behind closed doors. afraid to show their true badass self for fear of “being brought down a peg or two”, stirring up resentment, criticism, ridicule or someone misinterpreting their passion for what they do as egotistical.
Add into the mix the dynamics of a family business and the pressure of an expectation to put their stamp on the business and create a legacy to be proud of, I can understand why some leaders hide!
But leaders need to be brave and step up. Businesses need them to set the direction, plot the route and work out who needs to do what to get there.
I believe that’s showing up, not showing off.
